Gift of Life’s newest global initiative is our involvement in Uganda, where so many children are in need of our help. Uganda is home to the first child we ever helped – Grace Agwaru – more than 33 years ago. The country and many of its citizens share a special relationship with Gift of Life.
After months of preparation, we were able to send 30 Ugandan children to 25 separate Gift of Life affiliated hospitals in 13 countries in early May 2009.
This is the beginning of our efforts to help Uganda develop a sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery program of its own. Once the children have received their lifesaving surgeries they will become examples of the possibilities of Rotary. After we have healed the child’s heart, we need to make sure they have clean water, are fed, are taught to read, are protected from disease and become self-sufficient. This will be a call to action for those Rotarians who are in a position to help.
We’ll devote part of our blog to the stories of these children, crafted through testimonials, notes of thanks, photos and videos. We hope you’ll check back to learn about the progress of these wonderful children and how we at Gift of Life are privileged to be able to offer them a life-saving surgery.
The above photos represent the experience we had when many of our children arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, and were greeted with smiles and warm welcomes. They met our teams, our volunteers, hosts, and many other individuals involved at Gift of Life. It’s a day they won’t soon forget.

From Nanette Franklin regarding Natasha beging cared for in Memphis, Tennessee:
Good morning “hands and feet”!!!
I wanted to share something that came to me lastnight via a phone call from Host Mom Hope in Memphis:
Hope shared that while at a playground yesterday with the kid’s and family’s – ‘Tasha’s Mom Alice started sharing that she was “overwhelmed” by the love and care poured out for her and Natasha. She wanted to know why everyone was so wonderful to complete strangers? Hope said she tried to explain that the Lord shows no preferential treatment for a soul – He just loves all souls and that all that are helping them here and over there – do so because God made them with the capable hands and feet to do so. It would be wrong for them NOT to do it “unto the least of them”. So – passing that along – hope it blesses you all in what you do.
Thankful to be where I am!!!!
Natasha is in surgery as we speak.
Will fill you in as I hear it!

A heartfelt poem, composed by Pius Bugembe
Chairman, Ugandan-American Association of Greater New York
A MIRACLE AT JFK
05/07/09
In moments past, a miracle was wrought!
The amazing spirit a joy to believe.
The love to behold for none but them!
Smiles of life written in time
So real, so true, and indeed with calm.
The gift of life is the pearl of peace
And so are the hearts filled with love
Beyond the Nile and close to the Hudson
A world at large united in need.
The cause of life is the power to live
Willingly you give in sacrifices you make
The shelter you give is a miracle of love.
One at a time and many with hope
Now the praise and thanks to give
To The Gift of Life!

Pius also composed a note of thanks to Gift of Life and all its members:
Dear Gift of Life Member,
Words can never express my feelings on behalf of the Ugandan Community here in the Tri-State. Those moments of waiting, the arrival of the kids and their parents, the words of each person, and the hours we spent, were truly a miracle!
I am thankful for the great love and mercy you have for those who are crying inside and out. For those who are ailing in so many ways and yet you wash those tears with your acts of generosity. I am truly grateful for having met you and the few I was able to communicate with.
Thank you for giving us a reason to believe, to hope, to trust, and above all to love! What you do for those kids is not for them alone but for us too because in them lies our future, our success, our growth, to mention but a few.
I thank the organizers of Gift of Life for this noble charitable activity and of all countries in Africa to choose Uganda. Thank you for putting an excellent welcome and press conference today. We are very grateful! May the good Lord in whom we put our trust continue to enable you each and everyday. Please share my sentiments I felt today in this little poem. Ciao!
Truly Yours,
Pius A Bugembe, Chairperson

All is good here with both Daniel and also with Mich who is recovering at Tampa Children’s Hospital from his surgery which took place yesterday. Hi Lou,
It is an honor to be part of this amazing event. Herbert was one of 3 beneficiaries of Philippine GOL last week! We are very fortunate this year to have received blessings from GOLI, your District, RI and the 2,000 participants of our GOL Fun Run. These blessings will allow us to continue our work and offer our services to those in need.
All the best,
Phillip

Tevin and Desire doing well in DC….
Hello Team!
I’ve just heard from our host dad in DC and am glad to report that both Tevin and Desire are out of surgery and doing well.
Tevin went first and was considered more severe in terms of blockage. The procedure went as well as it possibly could have. The second issue was the hole and it had closed up significantly on its own, so they have no doubt that this will take care of itself with a little time.
Desire’s procedure also went as smooth and flawless as possible.
The moms anxiety levels have gone down and they are now resting together.
Thanks to everyone for your incredible support and encouragement. Keep this group in your prayers as things progress with our little men in DC

Dear Rudy and Daoud,
Indiana GOL congratulates the Amman group on helping out with our Hearts are in Uganda. Having been in the Al Kalidi Hospital I can picture in my mind the setting for the operation and the ICU as well as the wonderful friends that we made on our trip. We have had very succesful operations on two kids from Uganda as a part of this world wide project. Amazing that the coordination has been so successful, thanks to the dedication of Rob and Robbie. We currently have a little one from Kenya (21 months old with a cleft palate but now has a good heart) as well as Innocent from Uganda under post op care of Dr. Mark and Becky This weekend is the Indy 500 race that I was hoping that Rudy could attend. For a change, we are expecting excellent weather.
Mark is talking about a fall mini mission to Amman and a major spring mission to perhaps Amman and Kurdistan.
Best wishes and our warmest regards to our friends in Amman.
